Closing Summary- Market Synopsis- 19 March, 2012

The frontline Indian stock indices took a severe beating for the second successive session. The undertone was cautious as investors are skeptical about the Government's estimates on fiscal deficit and GDP revival. There are also concerns about the timing and the quantum of the repo rate reduction by the RBI in the coming fiscal year given the suppressed price pressures in fuel and fertilizers. Elevated crude oil prices are also a cause for concern as far as India is concerned. All this in unison kept the market sentiments critically low and led the midcap and the small-cap counters to close negative by nearly a percentage point each.
