Closing Summary, Market Synopsis : 9th December, 2013


The Indian benchmarks ended the day on a positive note on December 09, 2013. The indexes opened with a gap up on the back of strong performance by BJP in the assembly elections. Positive economic data from US also enthused the market. But the higher opening could not be sustained and indexes came down a bit. However at lower levels there was some sort of consolidation and indexes finally settled in positive. The market closed at record high today. The Sensex rose 329.89 points or 1.57 percent to 21,326.42, and the Nifty climbed 104 points or 1.66 percent to 6,363.90. Sesa Sterlite, ICICI Bank , Maruti Suzuki, L&T, and ONGC were top gainers in sensex, while top losers in sensex were Jindal Steel, Cipla, Tata Steel, Hind Unilever and BHEL. The midcap index and the small cap index closed in green with the gain of half a percentage point and four-tens of a percentage point respectively there by underperforming the main markets. On the sectoral front, most indicies except one closed in green. The Capital Index closed as the biggest gainer with the gains of gain of three and one - tens of a percentage point. This was followed by the Bank Index which closed with the gain of nearly three percentage points . On the other hand the Consumer Durables index closed as the only loser with a loss of just one-tens of a percentage point.

Further, the market breadth closed negative as nine stocks were seen advancing against ten declining stocks.
